Bored of the same old winter beauty trends that roll around each year and want to try something different this season? We recommend experimenting with alt makeup looks, instead.
Here are four alt winter makeup trends to try.
1. The Burgundy Lip Trend
This look works best when your skin is polished, glowy and fresh. Because this is a lip focus trend, the rest of the makeup should complement the look rather than taking away focus from them.
What works well with a burgundy lip? Paired this trend with clean winged liner and several coats of mascara. Sculpt and shape the contours of the face and add a flush of colour to the apples of the cheeks.
Step 1 Ensure that your lips are well exfoliated and moisturised with balm. We used the Catrice Lip Smoother Caring Lip Scrub.
Step 2 Outline your lip and create the shape with a burgundy lip pencil. Fill in the entire lip surface to add depth and longevity. We used the MAC Cosmetics Lip Pencil in 'Burgundy'.
Step 3 Apply your fave burgundy lipstick. A longwear formula will prevent you from having to retouch it.
Step 4 Add a touch of gloss to prevent dryness and deliver a high shine pout. We used the HUDA Beauty Silk Balm in 'Rose Quartz'.
2. The Embellished Eyes Trend
This alt winter makeup trend is all about embracing your creativity and making your eyes stand out. So keep all the other elements of your makeup look clean and polished. Add some slick winged liner and you are ready to start decorating!
The jewels needed for the embellished eye trend can be found at various craft and nail stores.
Step 1 Map out where you would like to place the jewels before you start applying them. You can do this using an eyeliner pencil. We used the Benefit Cosmetics Roller Liner Liquid Eyeliner.
Step 2 Some jewels come with an adhesive back. If your need to be glued on, a blob of eyelash glue will do the trick. We used these jewel and bundles from Takealot.

3. The Neon Pink Liner Trend
This liner trend that is dominating our feeds at the moment! It’s also easy enough to achieve but will have you looking like a pro! Keep the rest of your look clean and subdued so that your playful liner remains the focal point.
Step 1 Look in the mirror and use an eye pencil to lightly map out your look. This will help you to achieve symmetry and shape. Rest your elbow on a table with the mirror in front of you to keep your hand steady.
Step 2 First line your upper lash line. Start from the inner corner of the eye and trace outwards to the outer corner. Then trace a line from there towards your temple. This will be your wing. Check the symmetry and clean any mistakes with a cotton bud. We used the Kryolan Eyeliner in 'Neon Pink'.
Step 3 A pencil is easier to use if it’s your first time. But if you are more confident, feel free to haul out the neon-bright liquid liner to finish the look before layering on mascara. We used the MAC Cosmetics In Extreme Dimension 3D Black Lash Mascara.
4. The Colourful Brows Trend
We’re all about giving the eyebrows the attention they deserve! This alt winter makeup trend can be done in any colour you like, from bold to more toned down. And, as usual, keep the rest of your look barely there to let your brows be the focus.
Step 1 Use a lighter concealer to almost block out your natural brows using a mascara wand or makeup sponge. Make sure you have no other product on your brows because this could affect the concealer’s staying power. We used the MAC Cosmetics Studio Fix 24-Hour Smooth Wear Concealer.
Step 2 Dip a clean mascara wand into your colour product. You can use anything from eyeshadow to lipstick. Brush it into your brows until the colour is the intensity you want.
Step 3 Use a cotton bud and makeup remover to neaten any mistakes or smudges. Tie the look together by adding some of the same colour onto the lower lash line and pairing it with a nude lip. We used MAC Cosmetics Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour in 'Dance With Me.'
