The thrill of a mini road trip is enough to have me really looking forward to the weekend! Getting dressed up with a full tank and hitting the open road is definitely my vibe. And with some new and exciting food escapes making their way onto the culinary scene – all within an hour of Joburg – weekends just keep getting better.
Here are my top two that don’t only focus on the food but the journey as well. Start planning your road trips (and your outfits).
And then there was Fire...
This is one of my all-time favourite places in the whole of Johannesburg. Situated in the remote NIROX Sculpture Park in the Cradle of Humankind, arrival at the location takes you through an outdoor art gallery containing breathtaking pieces.
If this isn’t enough for you, nestled among the beautiful structures you’ll find this peaceful paradise – minimal yet striking. All-white couches and unique décor elevates the experience and takes you on an escape outside the city. The delectable food and drink options are, of course, the main attraction, and will take your tastebuds on a well-curated foodie adventure.

Need more food escapes? This gem needs to be at the top of your list! Nestled in beautiful green pastures and lavender fields in Lanseria, the visual experience truly enhances the visit.
The restaurant is situated in the centre of a beautifully curated park, with room to take a scenic stroll while waiting for your food to arrive. The modern colosseum aesthetic is the main visual attraction, with tall flowing fountains and enchanting staircases. It *definitely* feels like you’re in a fairytale far away from Johannesburg. To top it all off, the food is exceptional with a great variety of flavours and dishes to try and share with your table.
What I love most about these food escapes is the attention to detail. It ensures that each visitor has an experience that is beyond just food and incorporates culture, art and design as well. That bucket list just got longer.
