As a stylist, I know how attached we can become to our clothes. But we are also all guilty of holding onto items that no longer serve us. Well, not anymore, because it’s time for a closet cleanout! Daunting? Maybe. But you’ll be grateful when you have the organised cupboard of your dreams!

Need help nailing your closet cleanout? Here are five tips to make the process a seamless one.

TIP #1: Pack Away Seasonal Wear

At the moment, the weather is sunny and warm. This means that we don’t have much use for bulky puffer jackets and thick overcoats. Store these items away (after cleaning them!) in a suitcase or spare cupboard until you need them. This leaves you with plenty of space in the cupboard for the clothes for the current season.

TIP #2: Consider the One-Year Rule…

We are *all* guilty of the occasional impulse clothing buy. And many of us probably have items in our closets that we just never wear. The one-year rule makes us ask ourselves if we have worn something in the last year. If the answer is no, it’s time to let it go, babes!

TIP #3: … and Your Current Aesthetic

We all know how quickly trends come and go. This means we inevitably end up with a lot of fad items that were lit in 2015 but don’t really suit your current vibe. It happens. So go through your wardrobe during your closet cleanout and check that things match your style or are timeless pieces. If not, bye!

TIP #4: Separate and Sort

When you are doing a closet cleanout, create three different piles: One for the items you’re keeping, one for the ones you want to get rid of and the last one for things you can sell. The clothes you don’t want and are in good condition can be donated to a local shelter and you can sell high-end items on an online marketplace.

TIP #5: Organise the Keepers

So now you have a pile of clothes that you’re going to be keeping – awesome! Now you need to organise them in your cupboard in an intuitive way. Keeping similar items together – such as tees or pants – and arrange them by colour can also make it much easier to find what you’re looking for when you need it!
